- Who can join the Singles League?
The Singles League is open to everyone! Both juniors and seniors are welcome, and we encourage players of all skill levels to join. Whether you’re a seasoned player or new to badminton, this league is for you.
- How do I sign up for the league?
Signing up is easy! Just visit our Sign Up Page (insert link here), provide your details, and complete the payment before the league starts.
- When and where are the matches held?
Matches will be held at the Secondary Sports Hall at the NSC. The league runs over 12 weeks:
- Saturdays (5pm-8pm) from November 9th to December 14th, 2024.
- Sundays (3pm-6pm) from January 5th to February 9th, 2025.
- How does the league work?
We have a simple and fun format! Players are randomly assigned a starting position, and you can challenge others up to 4 positions above you. If you win, you move up in the rankings! Matches are one game to 21 points, with the winner needing a 2-point lead or first to 30 points if tied.
- How are the sessions structured?
To avoid long waits, the league is divided into 3 zones (based on player rankings). Each zone has a specific hour for play. Simply turn up for your zone’s time, challenge players near your position, and play as many matches as you can within your time slot.
- What happens if I can’t make a session?
No worries! If you miss a session, your position may move as other players’ results come in, but you don’t need to inform us. Just come back the following week and pick up where you left off!
- What should I do when I arrive?
When you arrive:
- Check the Singles League Leaderboard to see who you can challenge.
- Record your game on the Order of Play sheet.
- Play your match when it’s your turn, and after the game, update your result on the sheet and adjust your position on the physical leaderboard.
- How many games can I expect to play each week?
You should be able to play at least 2 games each session, but you can play more if there’s time! The session ends when the next zone starts, so enjoy your matches and challenge as many players as possible.
- What if I want to challenge someone outside my 4-position range?
The “4 above” rule is just a guide. If there aren’t enough players within that range at your session, you can challenge players outside that range. The goal is to have fun and keep the games flowing!
- Are there any special rules for the games?
Yes, just a few:
- Each match is one game to 21 points (with setting up to 30 points if tied at 29-29).
- Shuttles are provided, but please look after them!
- Results should be recorded immediately after each match, and positions updated accordingly on the physical leaderboard.
- What happens if there’s an error with the leaderboard?
If any mistakes are made with your position, the league administrators will correct them after the session, so don’t worry! You’ll start the next session in the correct position.
- Can I join the league after it starts?
Most likey, yes, however we would prefer as many as possible to join from the start to help cover the cost of courts and shuttles. Late entries may be allowed depending on availability. New players will likely start at the bottom of the zone that best matches their skill level, as determined by the administrators.
- Will my match results and rankings be published?
Yes, with your consent, we may share photos, videos, and results on the Isle of Man Badminton Association’s Facebook page and social media. It’s a fun way to track your progress and share the experience with others!
- Do I need sports insurance to play?
Yes, to ensure you’re covered for any injuries, players should have appropriate sports insurance. The easiest way is to be a member of Badminton England, which provides insurance. If you’re not a member, you can sign up for a “Compete (non-resident)” membership through the Badminton England website.
- What should I do if I have a query or dispute?
We don’t expect many disputes, as the league is meant to be fun and social, but if you have any questions or issues, you can reach out to the league administrators at performance@iombadminton.com.
- What should I remember each week?
- Arrive on time for your zone.
- Challenge players around your ranking.
- Record your results.
- Enjoy your matches and come back for more next week!
